My Shikakai Powder Experience

Wanted to share with you my experience cleansing/clarifying/conditioning my hair using the Hesh Shikakai Natural Powder. The following link will help you learn more about this fruit powder http://silverq.hubpages.com/hub/Shikakai-grow-your-hair-fast-and-healthy-using-Shikakai-fruit-powder

Ingredients (can vary depending on need):
Shikakai powder
Amla/Coconut/Olive Oil
Aloe Vera Juice
Bragg's ACV
Coconut Milk
Plastic mixing container & spoon & applicator bottle
(*Note: Avoid use of metal utensils they will cause a reaction)

So coming straight out of my 7wk twist, spray & bag challenge, I must say my scalp was unusually very clean w/minimal buildup. I did do a ACV rinse 1x around 4wks but other than that I did not wash during this period.

My hair was moisturized and felt extremely soft (Pic1).  I needed to thoroughly cleanse & moisturize, so I chose this approach.   After allowing the mixture to sit for half hour(to activate), I sectioned my hair in fours & applied focusing on my scalp (Pic2). Placed on a plastic cap & steamer for about 45 mins, then rinsed in the shower. There's really no need to condition afterwards, but I did using my staple:Taliah Waajid Black Earth Products - Enhancing Herbal Conditioner.   Due to my hair length, type etc it took an obnoxious 8 hrs of detangling/washing/setting...unfortunately I get alot of single strand knots, thus highly recommend detangling prior.

Styled:  Basic two-strand twist(8-10) using my staples Olive/Castor/Coconut Oils & sealed with Unrefined Raw Shea Butter Mix(Pic3).

*Notes: (1) this can be very messy to apply, use of a plastic applicator bottle definitely helps (2) was difficult to fully rinsing this out, the powder has tiny fruit seeds. I have used a similar clay wash previously from Hesh, which was seedless. I did enjoy the end result so much that the seeds were not a deal breaker :)

2 Strand Twists

Hey Now!

So I co-washed and conditioned with Pantene Truly Natural Co-wash and conditioner while in the shower.  I really like this Pantene line and the way my hair feels after I use it.  I don't really use shampoo I haven't shampooed in at least 6 weeks.  I know some may think that's weird but my scalp is still clean and healthy, there are no flakes and my hair still smells good.  I finger detangled while conditioning and rinsed but not too thoroughly.  Then I used generously, QP Mango Butter leave in immediately after.  I dried my hair a little with a t-shirt and my setup included my spray bottle with good ole H20, Coconut Oil and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.  I have heard some say the Shea moisture makes their hair sticky I, however, have yet to experience that.  I  finger parted for the most part and smoothed my sections out first using the water, the oil and then the smoothie.  I took my sections split them into two strands and twisted them around one another.  I had to plait the ends or else my hair wouldn't stay.  By the end it was nice and moisturized.  I pulled it back and left my twists in for 3 days because it was convenient.  I did spray during those 3 days, oil and leave-in.  I took it out moisturizing with water and coconut oil.  Style as desired...

Protective Styling - It's That Time of Year Again...

Winter Dryness....Ughhh

When looking for extra moisture, one of my favoritie "Go-To" protectant styles are two-strand twists.

I usually start with freshly, washed & conditioned, dampened semi-stretched hair.

To achieve this look, I started by parting each section in fours then finger part into medium sized sections, these are not "mini" twists.

Products:  Jamaican Mango & Lime Loc Gel, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Water & Aloe Juice Mix; sealed with my favorite Shea Butter mixture (Unrefined Shea & Coconut Oil).

Maintenance:  This time around, since my hair was extremely dry, I took it wayyyy back to ol' skool &  moisturized daily with S-Curl Activating Moisturizer & used the "Bag Method" (slept with a shower/Jheri curl cap). In addition to sealing my strands(ends) with coconut oil and/or castor oil, I must say this really helped my hair retain extra moisture and made my hair very soft.

Duration:  6-7 weeks.

I found a bargain!

I got all this for $11 at cowtown!  I haven't tried them all but I intend to.  I bargain shop especially when it comes to hair products because it's costly, and these products get used up in no time due to our infinite need to lock in moisture.  "Ain't nobody got time for that"                                -MeiMei
